Low-calorie recipes

Light meals under 200 calories a serving, made with what’s in season now.

4244 recipes

Under two hundred calories per serving, which in practice selects for vegetable-forward dishes, soups, salads, and things eaten alongside something else rather than as the whole meal. It is a filter on density, not on quality.

Read the serving size before you read the calorie count. A two-hundred-calorie serving of a side dish and a two-hundred-calorie serving of a main course are not comparable, and this list contains both. Sorting by calories puts the lightest first, which is often a dressing or a drink rather than dinner.

If your aim is eating well rather than eating less, pairing something from this list with a high-protein dish generally works better than trying to make a whole meal out of the low end of it.

Why the lightest recipe is rarely dinner

Sorting by calories puts dressings, sauces, and side dishes at the top, because they genuinely are the lowest-calorie things in the index. That is arithmetically correct and practically useless if you are looking for a meal. Scroll to the middle of the list, where two hundred calories represents a whole plate rather than a spoonful of something poured over one.

The more useful pairing is with the high-protein collection. A light vegetable dish alongside something with real protein in it produces a meal that is satisfying at a modest calorie count, which is a different and more sustainable thing than trying to build the whole plate from the low end of this list.

Serving sizes are the source recipe’s, and they vary in honesty. A recipe claiming six servings that any reasonable person would divide into four has a calorie count that is fifty percent optimistic. Where the number looks surprising, check the source before trusting it.

Cooking method matters more than most ingredient choices here. The same vegetables roasted in a generous amount of oil and steamed with a squeeze of lemon differ by a couple of hundred calories a serving, and the recipe title will not tell you which you are getting.
